Frequently Asked Questions
What is myofascial release (MFR)
MFR is a safe and effective, hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure to connective tissue to eliminate pain and restore motion. Recent studies have shown this technique to have a positive effect on damaged fascia and it is emerging, in the medical world, as the new solution to remove scar tissue and discomfort.
Who should engage in MFR
MFR is great for everyone but it has shown the most promise for people with severe or chronic pain. This technique prompts the body to breakdown and reabsorb scar tissue. Scar tissue results from extreme muscle damage or daily wear and tear. Youth and seniors alike are welcome to explore the benefits of myofascial release.
When should you utilize treatment
MFR can be used as often as needed. Each treatment will make a contribution to your recovery from pain and disability. Some clients even use myofascial release as a preemptive approach to avoid injury and maintain physical capabilities or even as a cool down after exercise. Not only does myofascial release eliminate chronic pain, it can also disrupt “plateaus” in your strength routine and raise your capacity for movement.
What should you wear
During your session, you will be guided into different positions, so that your range of motion can be assessed. To maximize comfort during your session, we recommend you wear less restrictive clothing. Athletic or loose-fitting clothing works best.
Do you need to be referred by a physician
No, you do not need to be referred by a physician. This type of treatment is in the category of corrective exercise. Corrective exercise is a blend of personal fitness training and injury prevention which are used in combination to help determine the root cause of physical imbalances and faulty movement patterns and overcome them. A referral from a physician is certainly welcome but is not required.
